Mission: Impossible 2 is a 2000 American action spy thriller film directed by John Woo and starring Tom Cruise, Dougray Scott, Thandie Newton, and Ving Rhames. It is the sequel to the 1996 film Mission: Impossible and is the second installment in the Mission: Impossible film series. Based on the series of the same name, the plot follows Ethan Hunt (Cruise) as he is tasked with finding and destroying a potentially deadly synthetic virus known as Chimera.

The film follows Hunt as he assembles and leads a team to stop a former IMF agent, Sean Ambrose (Scott) from stealing the virus and releasing it for sale to the highest bidder. Along his journey, Hunt meets an old flame, Nyah Nordoff-Hall (Newton), and is forced to choose between his duty and his heart.

The film was a major box office success, grossing over $546.4 million worldwide. It also received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the films visuals and action sequences but criticized its length and story. It received two Academy Award nominations, one for Best Sound and the other for Best Visual Effects. A sequel, Mission: Impossible III, was released in 2006.
