All the Money in the World is a 2017 crime film directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa. The movie is based on the real life 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III, the grandson of billionaire J. Paul Getty.

The movie tells the story of Gail Harris (Michelle Williams), the mother of the kidnapped teenager. Gail, who is divorced from John Paul III’s father, negotiates with the kidnappers for her son’s release. At the same time, she petition’s J. Paul Getty (Christopher Plummer), the grandfather, to pay the ransom money. J. Paul is initially reluctant to do so as he believes money can buy power, even over family. However, after being inspired by an emotional plea from Gail, he agrees to pay the ransom.

The movie is a gripping tale of a mother’s determination to make the powerful billionaire grandfather understand the value of family over money. It also brilliantly illustrates the moral dilemma between money and loyalty that arises in any family. All the Money in the World received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its performances and direction.
