The Rookie is an American police procedural drama television series created for ABC by Alexi Hawley. It stars Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, a forty-year-old newly minted police officer, who becomes the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. After a life-altering incident, Nolan retired from his comfortable, small-town life to move to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of being a police officer. Now, surrounded by rookies twenty years his junior, Nolan must navigate the dangerous, humorous and unpredictable world of a “young” cop. In addition to Fillion, the show stars Alyssa Diaz, Richard T. Jones, Titus Makin Jr., Mercedes Mason, Melissa O’Neil, Eric Winter and Mircea Monroe. The shows first season follows the life of Officer Nolan as he adjusts to his new career. He is mentored by his training officer, Talia Bishop (Diaz), and must deal with the macho culture of the police force, including a particularly difficult veteran officer, Wade Grey (Jones). He also finds himself torn between his commitment to the department and his colleagues, and his newfound personal connections. The other rookies include Lucy Chen (ONeil), Jackson West (Makin Jr.), and Angela Lopez (Mason). In the second season, Officer Nolans career trajectory and relationships with his fellow officers are deeply tested when a major event causes a massive reevaluation of the department. Also, Officer Nolan is involved in a romantic relationship with his former neighbor, Jessica Russo (Monroe), and is faced with the task of balancing his personal and professional lives. The Rookie has been very well received by critics, earning a 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a rating of 73 out of 100 on Metacritic. It has also been nominated for the Critics Choice Television Award for Best Drama Series. The show was recently renewed for a fourth season and continues to be a hit with viewers.
