The Good Doctor is an American medical drama television series that premiered on ABC on September 25, 2017. Based on the 2013 South Korean series of the same name, the series follows Shaun Murphy, a young autistic savant surgeon with Savant Syndrome, and his colleagues at the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. The series stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, and is executive produced by David Shore and Daniel Dae Kim. The show follows Shaun, who was raised by his father, a bricklayer, and his mother, a nurse, in Casper, Wyoming. After graduating from medical school, he joins the staff at the San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital and works on various cases in the hospital’s Surgery Department. Throughout the show, Shaun faces numerous challenges, both professionally and personally, as he tries to adjust to working at the hospital and coping with his autism. His colleagues are initially hesitant to accept him, but gradually come to respect him as they see his skill and dedication to helping others. The show has been well received by critics and audiences alike and has become one of the highest-rated shows on ABC. It was renewed for a fourth season in January 2021. The Good Doctor has been nominated for numerous awards and won the Peoples Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama in 2018.
